THE AREA

The South Hams is a walker’s paradise. Being keen ramblers ourselves this was one of the reasons we chose to settle in this area. We’ll be delighted to share our knowledge of the area and suggest walks to suit your personal requirements – from dramatic coastal paths to peaceful green lanes; from lovely wooded valleys to idyllic riverside paths – the range of possibilities is virtually endless. And we have an extensive collection of maps and guides you can borrow to help you get the most enjoyment out of your stay with us.

There are many breathtakingly beautiful walks starting right from our front door. A personal favourite is a circular walk through wooded valleys and green lanes to Dittisham village, a relaxing lunch-stop at the Red Lion or Ferry Boat Inns and then back home via rolling farmland enjoying stunning elevated views towards Dartmouth harbour and the sea.

From the village centre you can catch the ferry into Dartmouth – a lovely 30 minute trip. By ringing the bell outside the Ferry Boat Inn you will summon the ferry that takes you to Greenway Quay on the opposite side of the river. Here you can explore the beautiful restored gardens of Greenway House – once the home of Agatha Christie – or enjoy a delightful 2 hour stroll into Dartmouth.

Dittisham village has two excellent pubs, an exceptionally well-stocked shop, a café, sailing school and boat hire. Within a few miles there are literally scores of pubs and restaurants to choose from.

Close to hand you have the bustling towns of Dartmouth, Salcombe, Kingsbridge and Totnes to explore – with a fantastic array of shops, pubs, restaurants, museums and galleries. There are several fascinating houses and gardens open to the public within just a short drive.

A picturesque drive of about 45 minutes takes you to the unspoiled splendour that is Dartmoor. Explore the open, bleak moorland, majestic Tors, ancient deciduous forests, rivers and streams that give the National Park its unique appeal. Learn about some of the many historic sites that proliferate the area. Soak up the historic charm of the many old villages and market towns.
